Prerequisites:

Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

General Description:

An advanced cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience. The individual can act as a skipper or crew of a 30-50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters. The standard includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.

Planning

  • Range of a vessel – motoring,food and water
  • Provisioning for a cruise/menu planning
  • Documentation for crossing international borders
  • Spare engine parts

Safety

  • Use of vessels safety gear, harness, fire control, fire avoidance
  • Navigation rules
  • Hypothermia and survival in cold water

Living Afloat

  • Using a galley, cooking underway and cleaning
  • Gear stowage

Weather

  • Introduction to meteorology
  • Planning around the weather

Seamanship

  • Being seen on the water/collision avoidance
  • Engine failure
  • Securing a vessel in tidal waters
  • Tahiti tie and Baltic moor anchoring techniques
  • Understanding your surroundings and how your boat reacts to them
  • The marine head
  • Customs and courtesies

Sailing Skills

  • Daily and weekly maintenance and inspections
  • Maneuvering in a confined space
  • Towing
  • Plotting a course and reading charts
  • Piloting in unfamiliar waters
  • Act as skipper an crew on a live-aboard cruise

This course is taught normally over a three day live-aboard cruise or part of a one week inter-island sailing cruise on yachts in the 40-50’ range.
