BASIC COASTAL CRUISING

Prerequisites:
Basic Keelboat Certification

General Description:
Able to cruise safely in local and regional waters in length in moderate wind and sea conditions.

GEAR AND EQUIPMENT

  • Identification, description and discussion of vessels fittings, maintenance/tuning
  • Gear stowage, required equipment
  • Reefing systems, how to reef a sail

SAFETY

  • Use of vessels safety gear, harness, fire control, fire avoidance
  • Navigation rules
  • Hypothermia and survival in cold water

WEATHER

  • Interpreting and applying marine forecasts

DUTIES OF SKIPPER AND CREW

  • The skippers responsibility
  • The crews responsibility

SEAMANSHIP

  • Sail combinations for variouis wind and sea conditions
  • Understanding charts
  • Choosing an anchorage and proper ground tackle
  • Responding to emergency situations

SAILING SKILLS

  • Maneuvering under power
  • Sailing points of sail, specializing in efficiency
  • Reefing and heaving to
  • Sailing a compass course

This course is typically conducted over a two day period for a small group of one or two persons or can be incorporated in one of the longer sailing cruises. The course is designed to further ones understanding of the vessels operating systems and to give the student confidence in their ability to handle various circumstances. This course assumes knowledge of basic sailing and emphasizes the refinement of those skills.
